The German pop-star Grönemeyer in a song once asked "Who lives in Düsseldorf?", and Mike Büskens thought the same thing when he moved to FC Schalke 04 in 1992 and then also lived in Gelsenkirchen-Schalke. The very neighbourhood through which Olivier Kruschinski has guided hundreds of thousands of people as a tour guide. Together, they take a look at the district, its potential and its history during a tram journey to the Schalke Arena. Schalke in fast-forward - it leaves you wanting more.
Football is all about money? In the Ruhr region, everything revolves around coal? Both right - says Theo Grütter, Director of the Ruhr Museum. Born in Gelsenkirchen, he takes you on a tour to get to the bottom of the coal phenomenon. How were successful business, successful football and therefore well-paid professionals connected in the past - and of course still today? This audio tour itself is all about this and his very own path to the stadium.
From the youth at Schalke to the maker of Schalke's youth
Bodo Menze - that's 70 years of Schalke in its purest form. The father of Schalke's famous youth section "Knappenschmiede" was born and raised in Schalke, learnt to play football here and taught others to do the same. He was always at home on the Schalker Meile. He is now on the board of the Schalke Market Foundation and will take you on a journey through Schalke and through time. The tour starts in front of the entrance gate to the Glückauf Kampfbahn.
Even if they are no longer obvious in many places, there are many traces of Jewish life in Schalke - and in many places these are also closely linked to the history of FC Schalke. Jewish players, sponsors and officials of FC Schalke 04 were an active part of club life and the cityscape. The former chairwoman of the Jewish community in Gelsenkirchen, Judith Neuwald-Tasbach, will take you on a tour of the places of Jewish life.
"You had to have seen that" - a sentence that will never cross Sabrina Führer's lips. Sabrina has been blind since birth. She lets you experience Schalke with (almost) all your senses. What does Schalke sound like? What does it smell like here? How does it feel here? This tour will give you a new perspective from a guide who is not only a fan, but is also actively involved in the Schalke fan scene.
Sky reporter Dirk grosse Schlarmann takes you on a tour where he doesn't tell you much himself. But as a journalist and reporter, he naturally knows how to ask the right questions. Join Dirk on a tour of the district in search of the Schalke DNA - what makes this district so special.
