Rolf Rüssmann (right) played his way into the hearts of the royal blue fans for almost 11 years. He originated the saying: "If we can't win here, at least we'll kick the pitch." Born in Schwelm, he died in 2009 at the age of 58. He wore the royal blue jersey from 1969 to 1973 and (after a brief stopover in Bruges) from 1974 to 1980. After his last home game at the Parkstadion, he moved to rivals Dortmund for five years.
