Read here how the photographer might have experienced the day

It almost came to nothing again with the participation in the German championship. On the final matchday, Alemannia Aachen and FC Schalke 04 are level on points in the Oberliga West. Schalke only finished second behind Borussia Dortmund thanks to the goal difference. FC Kaiserslautern will visit Gelsenkirchen for the opening match in Group 1. Naturally, the clash between the royal blue miners and the red devils attracts the entire city to the stadium. Perhaps also because the draw was so close. 40,000 spectators are expected to be here today.

As usual, I have taken up my position as sports photographer behind the goal. There are still a few minutes until kick-off. I quickly run to the back of the north stand. I absolutely have to capture this crowd on film. Especially because people always come to the stadium in their Sunday best. Because on Sundays - the only day off in the week - it's first church, then the pub, and then the stadium. At least for the men. Most of the women go home and prepare dinner. My hands are shaking a little as I focus the camera. The teams could come out of the dressing room at any moment. I don't want to miss this moment either. I press the shutter release.

In the end, the Red Devils travel home with a 3-1 defeat in their luggage. Paul Matzkowski, Helmut Sadlowski and Hans Krämer scored the goals. But it was not enough at the end of the preliminary round. FC Schalke 04 now suffered the same fate as Alemannia Aachen: They miss out on the final round this year due to their inferior goal difference.
