The whole neighbourhood is already electrified on the way to the stadium. Today, the Knappen are hosting Berliner SV 92 - not an everyday opponent. People are already pushing and squeezing through the gates at the entrance. To be on the safe side, I hold my camera over my head as I enter the stadium. I don't want to drop it in the crowd. When I finally get inside, I look for a seat behind the gate. The stands are already completely full, but people are still streaming through the entrance portal into the interior. When will it stop?

But of course nobody wants to miss the game. After all, it's a deciding game! Well, a preliminary decider. Schalke are under pressure. VfR Mannheim are three points ahead of them in the table. If they win today and Mannheim don't manage more than a draw in the parallel game in Dessau, Schalke can secure their place as group winners in the last game against Dessau. And then it's on to the final round of the German championship.

At kick-off, there are no more empty seats and the crowd is packed right up to the edge of the pitch. Corner for Schalke. I push my way through the sea of people, from a distance you can probably just see my camera dancing above the hats. I arrive just in time. Adolf Urban has only just got the ball. He barely has room to run. He rows his arms to give himself some space. As he starts to run, I pull the trigger...

Schalke win 3-0 in the end, with Ernst Kalwitzki and Walter Berg scoring the winners. Two weeks later, they swept SV Dessau 05 from the Preußenstadion in Münster with a 6-1 victory. As group winners, they progressed to the final round and made it to the final. However, it was only enough to finish as runners-up. They lose 4 to 3 against Hannover 96, but bring the Tschammer Cup to the Schalke market as a consolation prize.
