Heiner Kördell

One of the last champions

Heiner Kördell was born the son of a miner in Wanne-Eickel. He learnt to play football at SpVgg Röhlinghausen in Herne. He spent his first six years in men's football there before moving to Schalke Market in 1956. Just two years later, the midfielder won the German championship alongside Bernie Klodt. Even after his career, which he ended at Schwarz-Weiß Essen, he remained loyal to the Ruhr region, but above all to FC Schalke 04. From 2001, he was a member of the honorary board. In accordance with his last wish, he was buried in the Rosenhügel Cemetery next to Ernst Kuzorra.
