Ernst Kuzorra

The twofold burial

* 16 October 1905 - † 1 January 1990

Kuzorra's life and career were extraordinary. Why should his funeral be an exception? On 6 January 1990, 1,000 guests gathered to pay their last respects to the greatest Schalke player of all time. Only one guest was stuck in a traffic jam on the way to Schalke: club president Günter Eichberg had broken off his holiday in the Bahamas. However, he got stuck in a traffic jam on the last few metres. By the time he arrived, the mourners were already enjoying coffee and cake. So Eichberg quickly sent team supervisor Charly Neumann to organise a new funeral procession. The much smaller second mourners laid the wreath once again and bid farewell to Kuzorra. The press recorded everything once again in sound and vision.

Over the years, this story has taken on a life of its own: it is often claimed that there was a complete second funeral on Eichberg's instructions.
