Hermann Eppenhoff
The gentleman from the Schalker Market

When Ernst Kuzorra saw the young Hermann Eppenhoff for the first time, he immediately recognised the 17-year-old's talent. Kuzorra brought him to FC Schalke 04 in 1938 and he stayed until 1955, becoming German champion three times as part of Schalke's circle. He was the team captain from 1949 to 1955. Eppenhoff was therefore a link between the circle and the 1958 champion team. Because of his calm and level-headed manner, Eppenhoff was known as "the gentleman".
