Herbert Burdenski

Schalke's first post-war hero
Ernst Kuzorra discovered Herber Burdenski in the youth ranks of Erle 08. In 1935, he smuggled Burdenski over to the squires. Legend has it that Kuzorra sent an errand boy to the Burdenskis with ten marks. He was supposed to ask if Herbert would like to train with the Schalke team. Burdenski made his debut as a 17-year-old in 1940. He became German champion for the first time at the age of 18. He was also part of the champion team in 1942.
After the Second World War, Herbert Burdenski scored his first international goal for Germany. On 22 September 1950, he scored from a penalty kick to make it 1-0 against Switzerland in Stuttgart. A year earlier, he had already moved from FC Schalke 04 to SV Werder Bremen. He played there until 1954.
After his career, he was active as a coach at Rot-Weiss Essen and Borussia Dortmund, among others.
